Automaton

Brian's Words

'Automaton' Album Cover

I thought it was about time to do a remix album single. There are some great keyboard sounds, especially the "phone line" synth effect, string swells, and "Vangelis" synth sounds on the remix of "Plastique." We kept the album electronica so it would not be as diverse as our full albums. I think it is better this way. The "Island" remix is meant to sound like a video game instrumental. It is really quite funny.

The album cover is a real photo, no joke. Bernie took it. Real classy.

Bernie's Words

Again, I agree with Brian. "Automaton" was due. Overdue, maybe. We have both always been fans of maxi-singles and remix releases, so I'm glad we finally put one out. The album title is actually purely based on the cover photo. I snapped a digital picture in Seattle, not knowing how lifeless it was at the time. On further inspection we realized how mechanical it made the world seem, so we chose it to adorn the album's cover, and named the EP "Automaton."

I think "Emblem" is easily one of our best songs, and it's still hard for me to decide which version, the original or the "Say Goodnight Remix," is better. "Plastique (New Brunswick Remix)" is our first real trip into ambient territory, and I think it is a successful one. I love the instrumental Brian came up with for "Hoax," and the lyrics basically just fell into place. "A Feel Good Translation" is my take on the lives of those who simply have fatter wallets than I do.
